It is official that Huawei has released its first laptop that is powered solely by HarmonyOS, the company’s own operating system that was built in response to the long-standing trade prohibitions imposed by the United States. Introducing a significant departure from Microsoft Windows, the gadget is equipped with built-in artificial intelligence features and support for more than 2,000 programs, the majority of which are designed with Chinese consumers in mind.

This latest version of HarmonyOS is a desktop-class operating system, in contrast to prior versions of the software, which were similar to wallpapers for Android. It provides support for typical multitasking, such as resizable and movable program windows, in addition to a taskbar and dock that are located at the bottom of the screen. In order to further differentiate itself from its Android roots, Huawei has announced that this version of HarmonyOS now utilizes its own proprietary kernel.

The artificial intelligence capabilities of the new HarmonyOS laptop are front and center. Celia is Huawei’s assistant, and she is capable of doing a wide range of productivity activities, like summarizing long papers, assisting with the creation of presentation slides, and more.

Huawei says that the laptop will debut with compatibility for over 2,000 native programs, including popular Chinese platforms and utilities such as WPS Office, which is a homegrown alternative to Microsoft Office. However, the laptop does not support Windows applications. It is anticipated that the app ecosystem will grow over time, but for the time being, it will mostly concentrate on China.
