India bans over 10 million WhatsApp accounts for this reason
In January 2025, Meta-owned WhatsApp banned over 9.9 million Indian accounts, according to the latest monthly compliance declaration. The company’s effort against spam, fraud, and platform misuse in these accounts led to this broad suspension.
WhatsApp must provide safe and dependable communication for its large Indian user base. WhatsApp’s internal processes erased 1.3 million banned accounts before user complains. WhatsApp’s algorithms automatically detected dubious conduct, such as bulk or automated unwelcome messages, fraudulent information, or unapproved contact lists, resulting in these preemptive deletions.
In January 2025, Indian WhatsApp users filed 9,474 complaints against other users for spam and account abuse. WhatsApp addressed 239 accounts after reviewing these complaints. This reaction includes account suspensions and account restoration for bogus complaints.
WhatsApp said that these steps followed India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
WhatsApp monitors accounts when they are registered, send messages, and get unfavorable complaints or are banned. Human analysts evaluate complicated instances to improve the platform’s surveillance controls.
WhatsApp has repeatedly warned users who spread disinformation, harass, or commit crimes that their accounts would be suspended. The corporation must also submit monthly updates on banned accounts and customer complains under Indian IT legislation.
